Portuguese imports of Chinese footwear have doubled in five yearstrendoneshoes
According to the 2018 yearbook published by the world footwear, leather goods and parts association, Portugal’s imports of Chinese footwear have nearly doubled in the past five years, to 97 million euros, or 23.6 million pairs of shoes, in 2018, dinheiro vivo reports.
It is reported that China’s footwear production is the world’s largest undisputed, with a market share of 55.8 percent. Portugal is the world’s 21st largest footwear producer, ranking 13th in the world in terms of value, at $2.257 billion. Leather shoes are the main product, accounting for 69% of exports, so Portugal ranks 8th among the world’s exporters of leather shoes.Plastic and rubber shoes and cloth shoes accounted for 13% and 9% respectively. Of the top 10 producers, only one is European — Italy.
Portuguese footwear imports from China have nearly doubled in the past five years. In 2018, Spain remained the major footwear import market, accounting for 32% of the total (21.2 million pairs) and 36% of the total value ($275 million).China has a much larger share, with 23.6 million pairs, but only 13 percent — $97 million — worth.
The report notes that many Spanish companies have imported shoes from Asia to Portugal at higher prices because of logistics and tax problems. Part of the reason for the increase in Chinese imports is related to domestic demand: “Portuguese industry is very strong in leather footwear, especially winter footwear, so some companies will try to import products to supplement their summer sandals.”
Portugal’s main export partners are France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, with 61.6 million pairs (74% of total exports) worth 1.558 billion euros (68% of total exports). The average export price rose 0.9% from the previous year to $26.78 per pair.
